Gelvandale Primary

The first principal of the school was Mr Westwood Yon, the deputy principal was Mr George Britton. Together with them the teaching staff had to cater for learners from Grades 1 to 7. This staff was known as the Foundation Members of the school. The school started out as a dual medium school, catering for English and Afrikaans learners. Today, fifty years later, only English is offered as the medium of instruction, due to the preference of the parents.

Over the fifty year history, thousands of learners have received their primary education at our school. Many have gone on to excel later in life, such as Robin Peterson (SA Cricket), Gillian Pillay (Television News Reporter), Denzil Dolley (SA Hockey), Chariton Tobias (Algoa FM), Jo-Anne Reid (SA Navy), Charles Butler (entrepreneur now deceased) to name but a few. Some former learners have returned as educators to the school, such as Mrs E Frans, now deputy principal, Mr S Domingo, Mr R Boggenpoel, Miss F Jephta and Mrs G Jacobs (Remedial Educator). All Foundation Members are now retired and sadly some of them have passed on to higher service, including Mr Yon and Mr Britton. Some educators have passed on while still in service at the school, such as Mr S Hitzeroth in April 1993, Mr K Holmes in April 2005 and Mr B Rawjee in January 2007, while he was principal.

The building is pre-fab, with a brick foundation and this was deemed to be a temporary structure, to be bricked at a later stage. Today, this structure is still standing and much remains the same, despite numerous requests to the Department of Education over the years to have the entire building bricked.

As our school was the first school built north of the N2 highway, it is often referred to as No. 1. Alpha Primary, at the corner of Bell Road and Gail Road, was the second school built in the area, also a temporary structure up to today. The entire school building was renovated in 2006, including painting of the entire outside structure and palisading erected around the boundary.

Our school colours are blue and yellow and this is the colour of our learners’ uniforms and jerseys. The motto of our school is “Knowledge is Power” and this is the reason why all educators throughout our school’s history have instilled the value of being educated in our learners’ psyche. The title of our school song is “For the fruits of His creation” and this is regularly sung at assemblies and on special occasions.
